Abstract:

Contains mostly correspondence, some on letterhead stationery, between McFarland, other railroad enthusiasts and organizations, and railroad companies. Most of the letters concern the buying and selling of railroad photographs. Also includes some railroad ephemera, a brochure for The Western Pacific Railroad Company "Feather River Route" and a typescript copy of a Southern Pacific Company "resume of instructions" for railway workers (with index) containing details of their standard operating procedures.

Robert H. McFarland was a railroad enthusiast and photographer in the San Francisco Bay Area during the early and mid-twentieth century. Prior to his death in 1954, he photographed Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, Northwestern Pacific, and traction subjects, as well as maritime and city views.
